Paintings of Reunion island, the sketches and drawings made during a fantastic vacation spent on the beautiful island of Reunion in May 2018. The opportunity to meet beautiful people and sketch unusual landscapes.
Painting in Réunion was a relatively rich artistic experience, first of all in terms of the human dimension. I had the pleasure of meeting Urban Sketchers to go draw on the beaches, like Sophie. The island bears its name wonderfully, with a multitude of ethnic groups that coexist harmoniously. Westerners, Mauritians, Africans, Asians … A great conviviality that I was able to experience during this wonderful stay.
From a landscape point of view, I was not disappointed. Lush, tropical vegetation with breathtaking colors nourishes Réunion with beautiful shades of green. Coconut palms, mangroves, palms and bananas, a collection of trees and plants so exotic. So many patterns to paint, details to draw: tropical leaves and flowers of gigantic proportions.
The beaches are not to be outdone, with beautiful stretches of sand as far as the eye can see. Colorful perspectives in which the turquoise blue of the sky blends into the cobalt blue of the Indian Ocean. These chromatic palettes allow you to have fun and dilute the watercolor or on the contrary to accentuate the contrasts with the gouache.
The vertiginous peaks and the breathtaking panoramas of the Cirque de Mafate, or the volcano of Piton de la Fournaise, are just incredible. I took great pleasure in trying to restore these dantesque, lush and tropical atmospheres, to put them down on paper.
Below, a few examples of my paintings of Reunion Island, made on site, which remain for me very good memories.
